I dont know the years. It doesnt really matter. You have one or you want one. That is the real question.
I have a crate motor Its is a BAP Geon japan rebuild. I got it for 500 bucks. Still in crate.
I also got a L-18 about 7 yrs ago from a import place.A Thailand rebuild. It was out of a place in Tacoma. But the rings went bad at 50k. It also has a closed chamber. So it seems most of the import jap motors were closed chamber.
The L-20b was a Japan export motor. To the US & Austrailia, maybe some other markets. I dont really care but if you can get one(closed chamber) I would. I wouldnt pay to much myself since I have a lifetime supply(75 -100bucks), And you dont know what the other owner did to it. Crack it etc...
I think one would be good on a L-20 for sure. But since L- motors are getting harder to find keep all the parts you can.Hawaii most Datsuns are by now one with the earth(rust). Only the Willy's Jeep will last there the longest. But I do see a good one every now & then. One who takes care of it.
If you can find a 80s Jap(crate) import motor its most likely a closed chamber head. L-16-18 A87 or W53 Thats what I have.

that's correct. You're not going to go into a junkyard and look for a certain year/model of car with an A87 head. It'll be blind luck if you actually find one that way. Best bet is to buy one for sale from someone you can trust as most likely you'll be buying it from the mainland.

Do you even have wrecking yards in Hawaii? It would be a shame if you did. The land is no nice over there.

Ya, no more than $100. I sold mine for that much and it was pretty clean, and unshaven.

Believe me they need wrecking yards!
Because most of their yards are wrecking yards. I never seen so much junk in peoples front yards. My grandfather place had a 510 in it. It rotted right to the grnd. I noticed the exhaust manifold. Said hey that was a 510!

ya iv done the same thing , only thing sticking out of the ground was the aluminum intake manny!! A private junk yard popped up and sucks. They sell there parts for almost full price at auto store (*bastards) and u have to take part off yourself(not so bad).I do missions in there and take what i like , jus me and da boys , a selected few. Its sick 510 coupes ,510 wagons , 620 s all stacked under 4 or 5 cars then shipped off island to never be sein again  . If i only had a yard or pasture. Many parts have come and gone , to my house that is!!!!
