I'd answer but I'm not an L series guy.... I always thought the A87 was the best head..... best in terms of L motors though.

The A87 has it's disadvantages- smaller valves and ports than the U67, for instance. The A87 was open or closed chamber depending on market. The U67's main disadvantage is the open chambers (the only closed-chamber U67 I've ever seen was a cast-iron Propane head). The second disadvantage is they shouldn't be used with manifolds that need coolant recirculation, because they have no ports for that.

would you guys know where i could get a manual for the L20B? i would also like to know if i go to my local parts store and try to get a gasket kit, what car should i say it is out of?(they can only search by car) i was told that the L20B did not come in the 1971 510. is thiis true? i also would like to get my hands on the manual for torque specs when i go to put the motor back together.

I plan to just make the car moderately quick and get it lookin pretty.

also have you guys ever seen a 4-door 510 with airbag suspension? what are your thoughts? has it been done?

The 620 trucks had L20B's in them starting in '75 through '80, (the first year of the 720.) The 200sx '77 through '79 also had L20B engines, as did the HL510's.

The original 510's had L16's. If possible get the manual for the year and model that you get the motor from, but any specs for an L20B should work. Try Wall Mart, even if you have to order one, and try and get a '71? manual for your 510. To identify the motor look just below where the #4 spark-plug is (pass side), where the head and the block meet, there is a casting on the block that is machined smooth and stamped into it there will be L 16 , L 18 , or L 20 B

The L16 would make the little 510 hop pretty good, an L20B would give it more than 10% more hop. Have fun.

So, Doug, how would you rank all the L20B heads and/or list all the pros/cons?
