when converting over to a custom fuel injection system (l20); say the guts from a Mazda Fe2, (2.2l, n/t.); could I use an aftermarket ignition like an MSD, instead of the mazda's OE ignition system? How could you get away without using any of the Mazda ECU's ignition, sort of a stand alone ignition system that has no ties to the ECU? any ideas?

Why are you using a Mazda system?

I don't know Mazdas in the least, so I'm assuming this contraption uses a single ECU to control both spark and fuel delivery, which is exactly how modern cars are set up.  Of course, a modern setup needs just about every sensor hooked up or it won't work right.

Personally, I'd use a '80-83 200SX injection system with a custom intake mani if I couldn't find a L-series EFI manifold (VERY hard to come by).  Not hard to make one if you can weld. The Nissan Z-series setup still used separate EFI and EI systems, so I'd just stick with the '79-80 L20B ignition.  The only cross between the 2 systems is the ECU gets its timing from the tach feed (negative wire on primary coil, via resistor).  Much simpler than using a crank position sensor.

If the mazda system is similar than there won't be a problem, just feed the ECU the timing signal from the coil.  If not, there will be a problem of getting all the sensor feeds into it.

Have you read this on L20b fuel injection?
