Have a chance to get a supposed real L18SSS long block, not rebuilt but supposedly ran when removed from the car. I havent heard back from the guy so I dont know his asking price but am curious to what it normally can go fo.

I dont think it has the carbs, havent talked to him to know the details.  In the add he said the overlap of the cam made it lope a little.

Does a stock L20b lope?

Its probably a modified L18 that he likes to throw the word SSS at

Learn all you can about the SSS. Ask all the right questions. If you can convince this guy that you know more about a real L18 SSS than he does, and it's all BS on his part, the phone will go dead!!!

ya, he's probably hoping for enough to buy an SR20 with... good luck

The L18 SSS was hardly more powerful than the stock engine if you really look at it. Hainz builds faster L16's in his garage with a single Weber!

The guy is part fo the local car club I am a member of, and he's also in the local SCCA chapter. From what other people have been saying about him he is trustworthy and not out to scam anyone. He has raced 510's and other Datsuns also. I will let you all know what I hear back.

No offence intended 74wagon710, thought it was e-bay or something, and all's fair game there and deserving of suspicion.

Ok, heard back from the guy. Its not an actual SSS engine but the head is an A87 peanut head that he has ported to match a real SSS intake.

Heres what he said:

I port matched the head to the SSS intake I had at the time, and it does have the peanut shaped combustion chamber.  It has the A87 casting on it.  How does $200 sound?  I even have some 87mm (+1mm from stock) pistons and a header I'm pretty sure will work with your 710 I'll throw in.  I have some balance and lightened flywheels and probably a roadster pressure plate to you can have.  I'm moving in about a month so bring a truck!

Is it still a decent deal? I apid $100 for a penaut heads from TDAAJ so it doesnt seem to be too bad a price. I am going to look at the stuff this weekend hopefully.

L18s/20 is 85mm
87 mm is +2mm over stock.(might need a bigger headf gasket with those pistons)

$200 isnt bad if come with all those parts

Got the L18 yesterday along with the other parts. He threw in a matchbox distributor with the base, an oil cooler set up, and an Edelbrock air cleaner for a four barrel carb(off his Chevelle).  Engine looks good, its the Japanese import L18 with the dual dipstick holes. Intake ports look very clean, exhaust ports are black but dry with no signs of oil burning. Inside of the engine looks clean to. Has the roadster clutch on there to. He has 2 510's in his garage, ones a IT racer and the other is more hopped up with Mikunis on a 2.3 liter engine.  Has the dogleg trans and a limited slip rear with Panasports.  He has a garage full of parts to.  I may go ahead and replace the bearings and all the gaskets before putting it in the 710.  I have a new oil pump and timing chain set I can put on there to.
