I found this by accident. It is for Corolla struts, but should be some good info for us 510 guys as well... Someone might even want to make a sticky out of it

It's very good info, we have been doing it to all our cars. Ask ratwagon how well his car handles, its all he ever talks about now. How well a car handles and stop is tops in my eyes. And if you need more info on it just ask; I also know the skinny on the rear coilover for CHEAP!

What cartridge do you use in the 280zx or the 200sx cut strut? I have always heard to use VW Rabbit cartidges. I looked them up the other day and there is NO WAY they are going to work...

Toyota Mr. 2, second gen., the rears work best. And the rear coilover...well you can use the Ford Mustang or a Bitchen-Camaro, yes a Mustang or Camaro. |

The MR2 comment... was that directed at my cartidge question? If so, why the rears? Valving? As for the Camaro coilovers. I have heard the same thing. |

Yes, the rears work best because of the valving, rwd, mid-engine.
And for those that have been e-mailing me and asking if I can provide strut case shortening service. The ask is YES and its $100 before shipping and I have a few 280zx case here so the turn around is next to same day. |

I have the MR2 rear inserts in my shortened 280zx strut housings on the front and the QA1 mustang double adjustables on the rear. I love the setup!

I think I'm gunna give the 2nd gen mr2 struts a shot in my 1200, I used vw fox inserts in my dime. I don't like the top that well though, they don't fit my camber plates that well. I'll have to talk to ratwagon tonight.

Jeff you have to try 2nd gen mr2.
All our wagons here are running the KYB AGX and we love them, 8-way adjustable, and I have kick some major butt at the local Auto-X events with them and I have been "seen" sliding up in the mountain with my wagon. That is all we stock down here and they are pretty cheap if I recall they are only $93. My opinion the best bang for buck! Oh for non-wagon driver the wagon (Camaro) rear shocks WILL WORK on your lowered coupe and sedan, hence shorter shock travel= mmm....good stuff. After the last post about the rear coilovers I have been getting emails from Datsun parts vendors that sell "rear coilover" they have not been happy with what I am saying or posting. All I have to say is tough cowpatty, I enjoy helping other Datsun lovers. |

Is that $93ea or a pair of struts?
I've got brand new zx inserts sitting here, but maybe I'll switch. hhmmm...but I don't plan on going as low as Ratwgn...so maybe they'll work just fine. |

Sorry guys let me clear all the info here: I can get the 2 Gen Mr2 insert for $106 each and they are KYB AGX 4 way adjustable. (These are short stroke and you have to shorten your strut housing.) The rear shocks that fits the wagon are also KYB AGX 8 way adjustable and they go for $93 each. (They also fit the sedan and coupe but are short stroke hence will only work on lower 510.) I have both the inserts and shocks in stock so let me know if you (Jeff) want them. And for the rear coilover give me a call at the shop for info.

And you're running a repair shop.....why?? LOL It's the only reason any of us punch a clock!!
Money doesn't do a thing to anyone....it's just paper. Good people do good things with money, bad people do bad things with money. If they're bad, they're gonna be bad whether they have money or not. How many broke A**holes do you know?! :) I know at least several!! For example....."good people" put on a bbq for their friends to come share... LOL j/k (I crack myself up!!) :) doh....just realized I haven't done a bbq yet! :( |

Okay....back to the thread. I've been doing some surfing on RockAuto and found something interesting. What I found is that the 300zx insert and the MR2 inserts are really close to the same dimensions. The extended length and the stroke are approx 7/8" shorter on the 300's. I wouldn't think that would make much difference.
mr2 strut dimensions 300zxNA strut dimensions If you check the prices, you'll see that the 300zx inserts are $15 cheaper(each one). Granted these are just Monroes and not fancy KYB's, but they better fit my price range. I would think that the 300zx's inserts would be even a little firmer than the MR2's since the 300 had a heavier motor in it. But it did have less body weight up front so maybe the MR2 had more weight in the rear. I guess what I'd like to know.....is there some "reason" that the MR2's are used or did someone just happen to see that they were shorter. I didn't find any specs yet about the weight differences with the vehicles. Maybe the valving is a good bit different between the two. Okay....just did some surfing on KYB's site... the AGX struts are not available for the 300's...so I guess that answers that question. So do you think that, for those of us that are NOT going to autox our cars, the stock valving of the monroe's will do the job? Considering the fact that I've been driving for months now on completely shot inserts with those nice bmw bumpstops(shortened) ...I think monroe's would be a huge improvement :) I wonder if the 300 guys know that they can use the MR2's adj AGX's in their strut housings with no modifications? Considering that the 300 inserts have close to the same travel (3/4" less) as the stock 510 ones, I suppose I could put a 2.25" spacer in the bottom of the stock 510 tube and run them until I shorten the housing? I've been running on dead struts for awhile now cause I refuse to buy the long (expensive) 510 cartridges since I know I'm changing to something shorter. I need to mod the oil pan before I go any lower...but that's just for my piece of mind :) |
