The new addition to my fleet. A 1988 Nissan Pulsar

It came to me with a broken transmission that wouldn't go into 2nd, 4th, or reverse. (all the lower gears on the shift pattern)

Iceman and I discovered a broken bracket under the engine that acts as a rear engine mount and a connection for the shifter linkage. The engine had dropped a couple inches when this bracket broke and when that happened the transmission pulled on the shifter linkage. This moved the shift pattern way back in the car out of reach of getting the car into half the gears. We jacked the engine up and stuck a block of wood under the oil pan. This allowed the transmission to be shifted properly.

The proper fix was to remove the bracket, re-weld the broken part, and then install it properly with all the bolts used so it would not break again. I did this in the last 48 hours.

the center of this pic is where the broken bracket flange was. You can see it was welded up.

I had to unbolt the sway bar to get to the rear bolts on the engine mount that needed to be removed. This took several hours to remove and only about 1 hour to re-install. I guess it helps to know what you're doing.

So I guess its all fixed up. I'll throw some spark plugs in it and see if it passes emissions. Everything works on it! (no AC and no radio)

I fixed a couple vacuum lines and put some hose clamps on the intake. A compression test showed that the engine is in good shape.

and strangely all the side marker bulbs are burned out. The front and rear running lights work fine. I replaced the bulbs up front and they came on so it was not a circuit.

Ya Ice, I think there is a Z in the back yard!  ...good eye

The Pulsar is planned to be the new daily driver. I'm not sure about the Fairlady though. I had plans to fix quite a few things still on the 280ZX. I don't really want to think about that until my 280ZX is painted and has new carpet and some other items. It might be another year still for that RHD guy.

There appear to be several more ZX's than I recall...

One looks like it's had a bite taken out.

I also see you've acquired a few 55-gallon drums. Those for the next guy that steals a car?

I can not confirm or deny the presence of 55 gal drums on my property. For the record, those may or may not have been taken to the dump several weeks ago.

The 300ZX's are mine and I need to get rid of them soon. Both 280ZX's pictured are not mine. One is already gone, the other got a huge shark bite and my friend needs to sell it. It is a turbo car.

Dang. I needed a couple 55-gallon drums recently. Actually still need one- my dad, for some reason, wants to make a burn barrel. Though he seems to think making one out of a 300-gallon former heating oil tank would be better (he already has that).    Me, I need to fill two with cement to use as anchors...

I want to try to fix the blue 300z, I'm up for the challenge, and you have a parts car to rob parts from.

a parts car with no parts left.... unless you need scraps of the dash and front steering rack. That pic is from last July. The white 300ZX is not as complete today.

oh another note, my 280ZX just passed emissions! I'm saved!!!

I'll give you one half filled with cement one day... ok? You can use it as an anchor and then just cut the rope when you're done.

Easy there!! You're half my age. I'd kick your butt......if I could get my leg that high! :)

Bleach...that is a nice Pulsar! I actually saved the pics of the underside for if/when I finally get around to putting this one back together :) Seems I still have a console and some dash parts running around here. At least mine has a radio and a/c.....but the missing motor is a slight detractant. :)

I took it for a long test drive.
The front end makes a funny noise that gets louder as speed increases. The engine still has that slight stumble on acceration with the new spark plugs. I think its a fuel mixture problem. It is more noticable when driving (under load). It gets right up to speed though.

The rad fan still doesn't kick in. Temp stays normal while driving. When I parked it for a few minutes to adjust the idle it started to slowly get too hot.

But it drives good, stops good, turns... oh, and even though it has power steering with fluid it doesn't really feel like it has power steering when you turn. but it doesn't make any noise like a rack with low fluid does. Maybe the belt was removed.

Sounds like you need to turn up the stereo and wire the fan to the ignition switch.

exactly. IT FAILED EMISSIONS!

The frame creaks a little when you turn hard and the front tires squeal (slide) slightly I think because they are so bald. this is when driving fairly slow.

I think I will just hook up the fans to the ignition switch or if I can figure out which wire activates the factory RAD FAN relay in the relay box then i'll just tie the signal wire into the ignition so it comes on every time I start the car.

It stays cool as long as I'm moving a little. When I'm stopped it takes about 10 minutes before it starts to get a little too hot. That aluminum radiator does well for having no airflow through it when parked.

oh, and I need a CD player

I took it out yesturday (on my trip permit)  went to the mall and a movie with a friend. The car looks pretty good but there is seriously something wrong with the front suspension. Maybe out of balance tires or something... the axels aren't rubbing anymore (as Icehouse saw when the rear mount was broken)

I took a drive down to the local Pull A Part. I picked up four coil packs from a Pulsar. After putting those in my car it ran sooooo much better. Perfectly smooth. that little studder is gone! yippie!

I have a feeling this will fix my emissions problem.
