I figured that I should post what I have been up to on my truck today:

they were quite rusty when I got them so I filed them down

 sanded them  really good

and primed them with some good zinc primer and shot them today...not bad for 25.00 huh?

Paint the tailgate latches to match? And maybe the DATSUN for symetry?

Yeah, matching tailgate handles and the lettering. This brings up a topic that was on here long ago now that I see how nice painted bumperettes look. Someone on here suggested on having molds made and bumperettes made out of fiberglass. I wasn't to hot on the idea at the time and suggested that somehow a company could be located that could chrome fiberglass or ABS plastic. But now that I see how cool Your's look, maybe that isn't such a bad idea. Fiberglass bumperettes!!! Painted bumperettes!!! A new trend!!!

By the way, On My old orange '74 that I built in 1980. I took the front bumper off, welded the brackets to it, welded up the side piece seams and the holes where the bracket bolts went. Then sandblasted off the chrome and painted it. This might be an idea for the front of Your truck. Matching bumper and bumperettes.

That's funny the "mold" question came up again. I just got a pair of bumperettes myself....off a guys 521 trailer. Paid $50 for those and the 14" slotted mags that were on it. The chrome isn't great, but I brought up the mold idea to the couple of guys that have seen them. They agreed that these could easily be straightened and used for a mold. I was going to see how the chrome powdercoat looked when I get around to finishing them. Evidently, there's some new stuff out there that looks really nice.....closer to chrome than silver.

I like the painted look too. The paint is more easily repairable than the powdercoat.....but I have the stuff to powdercoat them....so, we'll see.

Well, that was me that had mentioned making fiberglass repro pieces...I wasn't going to say anything until I had a couple of good sets done!

I was planning on making the molds from these after POTD this weekend...then I got side swiped this morning...no major damage just scrapes...but pissed me off really good!

Got the bed too but nothing a little sand paper and paint can't fix...

I will get the molds made next week and see how they turn out...the brackets will be easy as they will be for looks and not strength...

I am planning on doing the front bumper in fiberglass as well when I find a straighter one than mine...or pay to get it fixed...

The handles and letters will be painted as well but in the green and yellow that I will be striping it with...the whole truck will be purple though...I want it to fricking STAND OUT!

here's how the bumperettes looked when first recieved...

One good and one not so good...I was told that they couldn't be re-chromed as one was pitted badly...a little bondo and paint and then this!

I've always liked the look of painted bumpers after having my 70 Olds Cutlass done like that after the looks of the W53 and the 442...

Your chromer must not be very good.  Mine would blast, grind, and fill and leftover pits with lead and then chrome them.  He told me $150 to have both those done when i was planning on using them.

The biggest thing about having stuff like that re-chromed is the the shop you take it to.  Some guys dont like working with stuff that far gone (time/effort/some just dont know how).  Our guy only does classic car parts.  Since we're in the business of classic car restoration, hes an essential part of our business.  Finding the right guys can be hard.

Can't help wonder what shape your taillight lens and/or rear pannel, and maybe even your tailgate would be in with out the steel bumperette to protect it. You could have extras made, but I'd be worried every time someone parked behind me, they might bump and crush my eggshell's and take out the rear lights too! Keep the steel, chrome it, or, paint it.

Actually, you could do the fiberglass over a steel reinforcement that mounted to sturdy bracket. It would be plenty strong enough to take some bumps.

Once you've got about a 1/4" of glass laid, you can mix a thixotropic powder in with the resin as a filler. You get it to a peanut butter consistency and them putty knife it into place. It turns rock hard....literally! Used to use it in subwoofer boxes for stiffening. Much faster than trying to saturate glass mat and a lot stronger!! Anyway....

I figured there has been improvements in fiberglass in the last 20 years or so but dang..."thixotropic"...have to look that one up!

yea, I was stopped getting ready to back into my usual parking spot at Starbucks when this yahoo decided he didn't want to wait and went behind me causing this grief...you should have seen his white truck! Caved in his quarter panel!  Moron!

Many gels and colloids are thixotropic materials, exhibiting a stable form at rest but becoming fluid when agitated.

that would suck if you hit a bump and your bumper liquidified!

j/k

Mike...I take it you have played with these new substances before?
