 bullet Topic: My 510
    Posted: 27 May 2006 at 9:09am
Thought I would start a project thread on my 510.

It's a 72 2 door. I've had it about 4 months. It currently has a rebuilt L20b, W58 peanut chamber head, Offy dual plane intake, weber 32/36 dgav-ic, pertronix, header with a dogleg 5 speed.

I have it running pretty good with the carb.

My first major project for it is this weekend I'm installing a '69 crossmember, 280zx struts/front brakes, all new energy suspension bits and then taking it for a test drive.

Longer term, I have a rear 200sx disc brake setup for it as well as rear bushings. I want to find an LSD diff.

I really want to get rid of the distributor and carb.

My current thought is to go with Megasquirt II with a v3 board. First step will be using this to control an EDIS4 direct fire ignition. Then when I get the EFI setup convert to EFI.

I want to run individual throttle bodies as it looks rather easy to do with the MS. So, the only real hurdle is finding an intake. It looks like injectionlogic makes them. So, we will see if they reply to my inquiry.

I appreciate other people's ideas and input, so feel free!

I had an oil pan leak, so I decided to re-seal it while I was doing the front suspension this weekend. After I pulled the struts, I used a cherry picker to support the engine and removed the crossmember.

[Look at the motor mount! No crossmember]

This made dropping the oil pan easy. Put it back together with the 280zx struts and brakes using Energy Suspension bushings.

It is a much nicer car to drive now that I have springs! The 280zx brakes are a serious improvement over stock!

Today I ordered Ground Control coil overs - 8" 225# and Ground Control camber plates. I want it lower and this will do the trick!

Couple of notes on the 280zx strut conversion - it is cheap to do. I bought struts complete with brakes that look new(ish) for $50. A wheel spacer may be needed. I measured about 1/8" in order to not rub the wheel on the strut tube. I ordered a 1/4" spacer from Pauls Fab. This creates another issue - lug studs aren't long enough.

Nissan sells 50mm studs for $7ea. Napa sells 45.5mm studs (part number 641-2785) that fit perfectly for $2.49. I picked up new bearings and seals at the same time.

I love the brake upgrade. Especially for the cost of admission!

Now the EFI news...

I picked up a set of ITB's with injectors, fuel rail and TPS for $56 shipped on eBay. This is a second set. I picked up the first ones for $17 shipped!

I'm about half way done roughing in my intake manifold halves. They are going to be ugly. I cut a stock intake just above the flange. Since I don't have a tig welder, I'm going to JB Weld the runners to the flanges to build a prototype.

Once it is running, I'll have some made.

EDIS crank trigger distributorless ignition. I got the EDIS4 module, coil, brackets & wiring from UPullIt today for $20. I found a guy to machine the 36-1 into my stock crank pulley for $80. The only real detail left on the EDIS install is to make a bracket for the VR sensor and buy some nice plug wires.

I will have MegaSquirt II v3 powered Individual Throttle Body EFI with distributorless ignition, wide band O2 and unlimited tuning for right at $800! Probably much less than!

Also, since there was mild interest here is a photo of my 200a, yes two hundred amp, Delco CS-130 alternator that has the same straddle pivot mount as the stock POS alternator.

I just finished installing the longer studs and new bearings. I could easily run 1/2" or maybe 5/8" spacer and still have plenty of thread for the lug nut.

Since this is a project page.. After I get the EFI working, I'm going to go with wilwood brakes all around. Just need to get the front caliper bracket made up.

Dude I don't know were to start so many cool things. What ITB's are you running? I like the jb weild idea to. I want to run the same setup on my truck.

If you think the brakes are that much better you should try the t3 tc rods they help the breaking so much you wouldn't beieve it, wow wweee that combination is the best.

My suspension book says polly bushings are bad because they wear causing more deflection than the previouse rubber bushings. Given enough time. From my experience they last around a year, they do feel good untile then :-) just thought I'd share some stuff I read from a book witch isn't very often haha.

O I'm not say your stupid or anything haha I just thought that was weird when I read it, I had to read it twice. I would still run them to, I'm just glad I know what the vabration will be from haha... Your lucky I didn't read that book before I went down there I talk everybodys ear off know :-) suspention is my favorite.

I know its your thread but I wanted to know what you think about running a vw radiator up side down? They have no cap so I can't really see any problem myself, your the enginer though :-) I bought a vr6 radiator today, I read they are susposed to be great.....time will tell. I'm also going to invest in a fancy fan.

Back to suspension what are your plans for the rear?

i'm thinking about the rad question.

suspension for the rear. i haven't thought about it much at all.

i've considered troy ermish's coil overs because they are so sexy. a buddy recommended D-50 front springs cut to installed height.

currently, i'm running what came on it. suggestions? i want a damn LSD before i do anything else back there.

my friend here did a Z31 R200 in his. i'm thinking find a later Z31 Turbo LSD and do that. What are you doing for a diff?

Who cares whose thread it is ? I know I don't. All I care about is information being exchanged and a laugh or two.

I wouldn't do the d-50's I tryed them and they weren't very stiff, it rode nice on the freeway.

I have the t3 rear coilovers, if I were in your situation,(being a engineer) I would get s13 coilovers and convert them to fit. "I heard" all they need is a different tophat like the one that comes on the t3 rear coilover.

Are you talking about nelsons rear suspention? Because that is what I want :-) besides a narrowed z32 rear suspension.

Just about 650 after shipping, I like them but I can't tell the difference between settings maybe its because I got 300 lbs springs I want to replace them with 250's its a little to stiff.

Updates:

I took the car to get it aligned today. It was pulling really bad. The alignment shop (Alignment Specialties in Aloha, OR) was great. He really knew Datsuns and gave me some good info.

I just ordered my steering components from www.partsamerica.com $170 for all tie rod ends, adjusting sleeves and center link - including shipping. I also ordered the T3 T/C rods.

After talking to the guy at T3, I'll be going with T3 rear coilovers as I can afford them.
