California sucks!  This has nothi8ng to do with Datsuns but I just had to vent.  My 2000 Chevy Blazer needed a smog test for my registration.  No big deal I figured.  Its only 6 years old, right?  WRONG! I failed the test because of a goddam stripped battery terminal that reset the computer some time within the last 200 miles so it shows a pending trouble code, not even a check engine code, and im out the $40 for the test.  Even though I passed emissions with flying colors.  On top of that I have to buy a new battery and pay the $40 testing fee again.  Thats a couple hundred I could have spent on my Datsun! F Arnold!

Yeah the F-Arnold bit was for my buddy with his 76 BMW 2002.  Arnold signed the bill that got rid of the law that at least gave us hope that someday our car would be exempt.  Gave my truck more value while taking his away.

Dayum, In Oregon if you don't pass, you don't pay.
My 77 620 used to pass, even with all the emission
crap removed. Thx to Weber.

I wish.  Down here before they even start the test they enter your car info into the computer and send it to DMV.  Then they do a visual and if anything is modified you fail but they dont tell you right there.  They continue with the emisions test.  Even if you pass emisions you fail because the car is "altered" and you have to pay the testing fee.  The worst thing about that is that the DMV knows you failed and if you fail too many more they come knocking at your door wanting you to turn in the car as a gross polluter.  It used to be a rolling 30 year rule, meaning cars 30 years and older didnt need a smog but good old Arnie changed that.  Now anything newer than 1975 needs a test.
