OK, so the trucks L20B head gasket decided to start pissin a stream of water under #4 plug. Upon concideration, instead of a quick swap and make the Golden Gardens BBQ, I decided to tear off the head, clean up the engine bay, and get everything painted pretty. (Yea, truck guys are still hunting me down Then the next week asavage answers my thread for an L4N71B that should be in an 83 Maxima posted on craigslist for $100. He's intrested in the alloy wheels, Im intrested in the tranny... So last saturday we get together with his friend, who was a pleasure to be of aquiantance, I head under the car to pull the tranny, and when I finally come up this is what I find!!!! And the poor PO still needs to be the one to haul it out of her driveway!! (She was just happy to get the $100) So I throw my spare L3N71B in the trunk, (maybe should have given it to that guy on craigslist so he can then post two L3N71B's for $45 each And with all the replacement wheels we raked up she's at least not sittin on her rotors. (If they wree left!) Say bye bye to that straggling rim Bleach (THANX!) So I will use this thread to post an L3N71B to a L4N71B Automatic tranny swap into a 620 PU as it goes along. Hey odmanjohnson,,, ended up gettin everything needed for under $50!!!!

Already GONE!!!! Believe it or not,,, asavage asked me to swing by and pick up MORE parts off of it,,, but,,, she wasnt there anymore. The neighbor had a decent looking 78 Toyota PU, well lifted, straight, all crome and hardware off of the body. Looked like it was headin for the paint shop.

AFAIK, the lockup torque converter wasn't available until . . . 1982, the year before the OD was added. Or did someone already do a 3-spd-with-lockup swap on your truck? |

The alloys cleaned up nicely.
![]() ![]() No center caps though (still available from Nissan @ $19 ea!). The two Goodrich tires look OK, the two Michelins are worn out on the inside and one has a massive bead leak, so they'll get swapped out. Dale, when you get your trans out of the truck, would you borrow a real camera and take a side-by-side? Something like this: ![]() If time permits, I'd come out to your place to take a few pics. I've got a L4N71B out on the floor here, but no L3N71B out for comparison (don't say it!). |

Yea, I can do that Al. But now that you pose the question, it may be an L4N71B next to a 3N71B !!!

TTBOMK, the 3N71B & L3N71B externally look the same. I assume that this casting number would be different though:

1) Car wash. I've done enough wheels there to be able to keep most of the soap off of me now ;). That took off the majority of the moss.
2) Castrol SuperClean ($9/Gal) ![]() in a utility spray bottle ![]() and a stiff nylon parts cleaning brush The SuperClean is primarily sodium hydroxide (lye) and is very caustic, so it can't be used on warm aluminum, and you have to use care with cold aluminum alloys or it will etch. However, it does work very well. I won't use it without the latex gloves, it'll eat your skin -- well, it eats mine anyway, but I have rather sensitive hands -- hey, I'm a sensitive man! I've used JobMaster, Simple Green, and a bunch of others, but the SuperClean is the best bang for the buck. Good ventilation is helpful. At work, I clean small parts in the bathroom sink, and the fumes are pretty heady. And small drops of the stuff that the parts brush flings on your bare skin (face and arms for me) will start to burn, just like battery acid. You have to wash it off failry quickly. Unlike battery acid, it hasn't damaged any clothing of mine. |
