Hi, I made 8 sets of brass shifter bushings, I tried them out in a buddies 620 as well as my 510. They seem to work really good!! I plan on machining the bottom cup out of brass as well. My question is, would anyone be interested in purchasing a full set of these bushings?? The sets that I have been making have a really tight tolerance and are a PRESS fit into the shifter. They do not fall out when you are trying to install the shifter. I see these on Ebay all the time for $15.00 shipped to $28.00 for a set with a delrin cup. If a few local people are interested in trying a set out let me know I will hand them over free of charge just to find out what you think! Right now I have 2 sets left and one chucked in the lathe that will be done tonight. Thanks Have a great weekend!

If they go in a 510 are they for the early style shifter only? |

I have a dogleg 5 in my dime. they fit my friends 78 620 as well. I put them in a 81 720 a few years back too. I know the mid/late 80's 4x4 has a different setup but you can put a older stick in the newer tranny.
Thanks

I'd be willing to test a set in my 521 if they fit.

Sure!! Are you close to McMinnville?? If so I own the Hobby Store on 3rd street. We are open Tues. - Sat. 10:30 - 6:00. If you are not that close I can probably mail them? Or we could work somthing out. I am pretty sure they will fit a 521 If they don't I should be able to make some that do. Thanks again!!

The shifter on the 4spd(at least the one that came in the 521) and dogleg are quite a bit different. The 4spd uses rubber cones that fit onto the shifter in a vertical fashion. The dogleg and I'm pretty sure the long tail 5spds, used bushing that fit into a horizontal hole in the shifter. I've seen pics of both online, but just don't have the time to find them right now.

Sounds like they only fit 1975-84 L-series style shifter handles then. the late 510 you mention, 1978 620, and dogleg are all 'late' transmissions. Also, they will fit my 280ZX transmission in my truck. I would love to try a set. They will probably not fit stock 510 and 521 4-speed shifters. (1974 and older) |

Well, I am going to pick up a 521 Monday I will take a look at the shifter setup and see if I can work something out!
I have a few sets of these now. I am testing every set that I plan on giving out. I did notice that each tranny almost needs the bushings fitted to them. I have came up a kind of one size fits all measurement. I am wondering if I should make them a little big and let you guys trim them to fit so they are perfect? What do you think???
Thanks again!!!

Oh one more thing. they fit in my 720 with the z2.2 but the 84 4x4 I parted out had a way different shifter, But the tranny was the same so one could use a older shifter with the brass in a newer tranny.

I always thought the old style 510 and 521 traanys had more slop in the tranny more than the bushings. On my 521 with the stock tranny its so slopped out that it moves about a foot going around corners.

On the old 510/521 shifters it's not the rubber bushings that cause slop as the guys who sell aluminum ones want you to believe- it's the fork below that and the selector rod. The fork wears out, and I haven't found a good way to fix that.

That's what I was thinking buddy, on another note you didn't check out the z dude, it was sick. And I didn't get to check out your wagon.

I remove the pin!
I get a threaded bolt and squeeze the fork so its tighter. it helps,at least for a while. The aluminum bushings are a scam. I never seen one go bad its always the forks wear or spead apart. causing the shifter to be loose. |

Socializing isn't my thing. Besides, not much to look at- basically a 300K-mile bone stock (mechanically) '78 Wagon. I mean, the whole emissions setup is still present and functional.
Besides, from May-July it's still daylight out. |

First time I ever took the '78 510 Wagon to a meeting (been going for 3 years now). Have never taken the "Blue Beater". In fact the only HLA10 type I ever took to a meeting was the '81, which was totalled shortly thereafter. I take the 4X4 more often than anything. But it's usually whatever I'm driving. Always a Datsun. Used to be the 720 all the time, as it was my commuter until the transmission bit it. Even when I had the Mercury as my commuter (gee, I can't imaging commuting in a V-8 land yacht now) I never took it.

I looked at my 521 yesterday, I can make the lower bushings, but as someone stated before the slop looks like it is in the tranny itself! Oh well I will make a set anyway just to see how well they work. I noticed with the ones I have in my 510 work pretty darn good!
Thanks
