How cool is it that you got your dads truck back after all that time! What are your plans for it?

Yeah I am very happy with this. What are the odds that the owner would let it set for all that time?....slim to none? First thing is the L20 in the photo...got a friend in Estacada that does upholstery. Hes gonna redo the bench seat. New front fenders from...i think it's "partstrain" both drop shipped for about 185.00. Probably keep the wheels and put hub caps and PHAT-ASSED Hoosiers on them...how cool would they look? Header from Bills Datsun Shoppe in Clackamas and a Carbs down the road........Dave |

you you going to use the auto transmission?
There might be a flex plate issue since a L20 is a 6bolt crank and the L16/18 is a 5bolt crank Datsunaholic would know more in this unless your going to add a manual trans to it. also where the L20 come out of. L20s from cars use a 200mm clutch set up L20s from trucks use a 225mm(heavy flywheel) set up |

Ooh, I didn't notice the A/T until Hainz mentioned it- yes, you're gonna need a 6-bolt flexplate if you intend to use the A/T with the L20B. Fortunately all Datsun L-series and Z-series from '75-on use the same flexplate with A/T (Trucks, cars, Z's). Lots of chances to find one.

Thanks Guys!...yEah I'm keeping the auto. I drive truck/trailer for a living and shifting a vehicle after work is the last thing I want to do. How much can I expect to pay for the part? |

The part will be cheap I bet
Its tearing a motor and trans apart in a junk yard thats going to be hard. Maybe ezer to just find another L16/L18 which uses the 5 bolt pattern Youll need the flex plate and theres a little metal adapter thing thats on the end of the cranks shaft to fit the flexplate. also if using the L20 the pipe comong out of the L20 is not the same as the L16 so there will be issues there also. The L20 is taller I dont know the year of the L20 you have but after a certain year they went to a round port exhaust and if you whant to you have the L16 one Im sure its a square port head. You have to take all thin into consideration. This should be planed out before taking it on cause most people just say hell with it and dump the vehicle swap the oil pan also from the L16 |

L16s use a Y pipe type exhaustmanifold A 2 IN TO ONE.
The l20 you have its just a pipe that hooks up to its manifold. But if you want to use the L16 manifold you have to find out if it s a round exaust port head. You can look by the Head casting on the other side. If its a U67 head then you can more or less your your L16 ex manifold. There is a little more also on the way the head is heated . Some L20 heads have to be driled for the water passages if using the stock L16 intake (which i PREFER). |

Since you're in washington, I'll keep my eye out for an auto tranny setup that is not needed. |

if the w53 head you have has closed combustion chamber and square ex. ports, use that. use the l16 intake manifold, and a header if you're going that route. duggy, the w53 is a peanut head? I get confused. Dave yeah, use that dist that's on there. ask all the q's you need, you've come to the right place. |

Thw W53 is peanut/square port. The W58 is round exhaust, but can be open or closed (I have both. Closed were an add-on part, not used on standard stuff). W53s did not come on L20B's stock (L16 and L18 in Japan, late 70s only), but W58s did and you have to look REALLY close or you confuse the 2. W53 is essentially identical to a closed-chamber A87 with the larger (not largest) valves. A87s vary widely. W53s were pretty much a standard casting, but some were factory drilled for EFI.
