Ok here is the kinda shortend story

Last year I threw a rod . I bought a L20 from a kid who swore it ran so i put it in and after a hella time i got it to match up with my 5 speed (throw out issue)

The truck ideled ok but it sounded like it had an exhaust leak that i could not find . so after replacing the Header gasket a few times i found it was the HEAD gasket . than after reading again and again how to make the littke wood thing to not drop the chain i swapped the head gasket .

Now after this truck started and ran for bout 10 mins .  than would not start .

After changing plugs, wires, rotor, kap , and Gas (though might be old )

got it to half ass run.  Limped it home from where all the work was done spittin an sputtering ... but it hit 60mph???

Now it will not start .... so it sits in the garage on 4 wheel dollys

I've had a American tech look at it and he's got no idea

I'm thinking it's going to take payin or Horse trading someone who knows DATSUN stuff to get it running the way it did b4 ....

thats bout it   thanks to all that are racking their brains

lastly ... ideas i have ...

1. Carb needs rebuilt

2. Head has valve sticking ?

3. dist. Bad ?

If you are running a points distributor, then change the points and condensor. Set the point clearance.
I once had spark, but the points were bad or something and the spark just wasn't enough to run it. After replacing those $8 parts the truck ran great. (these days I use electronic ignition dizzys)

Compression test. Maybe check your valve clearance.

If it ran and drove then I would say the cam (timing chain) is good. The ignition timing might be off slightly but just adjust that back and forth a little. Really, that shouldn't matter too much. A good engine will run advanced or retarded a little.

The matchbox electronic distributors come on the 1979-80 trucks. And maybe even the 1979 200SX.

Used prices vary. $20-80. Depends how many crazy 510 enthusiasts are bidding on it as well (if its on eBay)

ck and gap the points, ck all the wires to the coil ballast resistor. Hope you still have a ballast resistor? The white ceramic block?
If not ceramic block then coil burns up after awaile .

adjust the valve lash, I know you have a book so I wont tell you the settings.

Time it with a light. tell us the timming settings. This gives us a idea if its off a tooth or not. If it AJUSTS(on timming plate) between 0 and 20deg BTDC I say its good.

I personally could never get that wood block to work right.

true that, i never even try doing the wood wedge thing. it only serves to piss me off when it slips and i gotta take the timing cover off anyway. i don't think that i've ever gotten the dizzy in on the correct tooth on the first try either. if your truck is running crappy and lacks power at most engine speeds i'd be thinking it had a timing problem. a little more on how and when its running could help. my rings were so bad one time i only had in the 60 to 70 range per on a compression test. the engine still ran fine though. a bunch of crank case blow-by was the only reason i even tested it.

Yea i read the whole how to on the timming .. where it has like 4 pics on how to do it and all

I've been over it again and again .. Every thing looks and checks out to waht i can see .

I might have to trailer it to someone and say here is a credit card . fix it and call me ...

Or i may start looking @ swapping to a Chevy motor since all the friends and stuff work on them with their eyes closed ??

I love this thing But i'm stressed out after doing the same thing over and over ....

New spark plugs than wires than cap rotor and point

than new Ressistor block .. than headgasket

Now take off the Dist and look to see if it lines up with #1

now regap the points , now check the position of the rotor ....

I'm really ready to kill myself !!!

:0    ahhhhhhhhhhh

Btw - the latest thing is that it will not hold fuel up to the filter ?

after sitting for a day i have to prime the pump by filling up the hose with fuel from a gas can than hook up the line back to the tank >

sounds like the fuel pump diaphram might have a pin hole...

i had one that would let the fuel leak out of the line like that and it was the fuel pump that was the problem...

the fuel runs back to the tank in mine if it sets for maybe 4 days straight or more. But all I have to do is crank the engine for 10 seconds and it gets the fuel back... so ya, you've got other issues.

Lowpsi

Did you get it running yet?? are you using the same carb as on the old motor or was this one on the purchased motor??

If it were mine i would install a new fuel pump, electronic distributor, and a WEBER carb. Throw those hitachi carbs off a cliff.

What was done with your radiator when the BD was done. How about closeup pics of how the floor was done??
