    Posted: 12 October 2005 at 12:42am
I'm on vacation this week and since I spent my last one fixing a Pulsar just so it could throw a rod...I thought I'd do some of the fun stuff I didn't get to before. First up is the new exhaust for the wgn. I'm not a fan of loud exh, but I figure this is temporary until a VG30 goes in. I wanted it free flowing and short, but not obnoxiously loud. Here's some pics of what I have so far. I did fire it up with the open down pipes.....nice throttle response!!! My wife just looked at me (because of the noise) and said "I don't think so!!!" I fired it up again with it tacked into place, but with all the leaks, it's hard to tell if just what it's going to sound like.

Here's the parts. 3' long glasspak($42), 2" U-bend 6" radius($23), hangers($3ea), some adapters I didn't use, and a 7' piece of 1 3/4" pipe($11).

Here's a comparison between the 1-3/4" pipe and the stock system.

You can make out the louvers inside. I wanted perforated, but locally, all I could get was $90ea stainless steel ones......NOT! ....or wait for them mail order.

Check out the stock downpipe. I wonder how many guys have had their exh upgraded and the shop didn't remove the piece inside. The main pipe goes into the DP about 2" and it's a very bad place for it not to be smooth. So, it took a little bit, but you can see where I ground the weld down, the used a hammer and chisel to pop it loose, then pull it out. The 2" pipe is the same size and butts up to it quite nicely.

Next two are of the new pipe(cut from the U-bend). The small pie cut piece was to get the angles lined back up just right. I could have just sliced the end at an angle, but it was an excuse to make another weld :)

These last 3 show it tacked in place. I used some wire to hold the muffler and pipe into place. I'll put in hangers tomorrow and finish welding it up. The white stuff is cardboard strips I wrapped around the muffler. That was so I could push it up against the floor and still have at least 1/2" clearance. Doing it by myself and with no fancy stands like the shops.....you improvise. I'll put a hanger at the end of the muffler to control the weight and the other will be over toward the end of the system...to control the twist. I've even got a chrome tip for it :)

I'll try to post a couple of pics of the finish welds and if I notice any performance gains. It will take a week or so to check the mpg change.

Well, it's definitely louder...not obnoxious, but the stock exh was so nice and quiet. I'm not sure I'm noticing any kinda of performance improvement. I'll run it a week or so and see if the mpg goes up any. If not, I may just go back to the quiet one. Maybe I should order the perferated glasspaks I wanted to start with. With no pipes, the throttle response was great....so I'm thinking I still have too much back pressure.   We'll see. I'll put up a pic with the hangers in place. I know it's a small motor, but I was hoping to feel a bit more grunt. At least it was a fun project. I'll at least have it on at the bbq.

Looking good mike,

Any problems with ground clearance?

Thanks Garry. No prob with clearance...but I'm going to try to drop it at least 2" by the end of the week...so we'll see.

I'll add a couple of final pics to this thread, but first....I got to thinking about the "tweak" to the carb I mentioned....got me to thinking about how the weber just doesn't seem to like to be messed with. They're real easy to setup, but once they're set, you throw things off by "tweaking" :) Anyway....I went back and pulled out the directions and baselined the carb...okay...now there's a difference! I can light up the tires on the smooth concrete in the garage when I back out....couldn't do that before with the old sys or just after the new went in. So, I gained the ability to make a nice screach!!! I did it before with the old sys, but only before the back brakes were done...I'd have to power brake it to get them to spin. They wouldn't spin just by giving it gas...so I must have some better throttle response and even some more torque!! Yea!!! Okay...couple more pics.

First couple here are the downpipe. I imagine some of you don't know that the extensions above the plate are supposed to be there :) They tend to rot off most of the pipes. I rebuilt this one months ago, even before the motor swap. They sure help to keep the gasket from blowing out. I made the rings out of muffler pipe and welded them from the inside, then used a die grinder and carbide bit to help cut down the welds. Don't make them too long, or they bottom out in the manifold and leak really bad. Learned that on the Pulsar when I redid that pipe.

These were clamp on hangers. Once I got them mounted where I wanted them, I tacked them, then cut off the excess and welded them on permanent. You notice that I drilled the rivet and too the bar off one of them. Don't look too hard at the massive fillet weld between the pipe and muffler....that took some time! Should have lined them up a bit better first! I used some left over brackets from something else for the body side of the mounts. Used a fender washer on the inside to spread the load. I welded nuts on the angles so that I can easily take the system down when I want. 2 bolt in the back and 3 on the manifold...maybe 5min to drop it.

This pic ought to answer your clearance question Garry. It's a 4" outer tube on the muffler, so it's a hair bigger than other glasspaks, but I don't think I'm more than about a 1/2" closer to the ground than the stock system was...should have taken a pic of that!

How's this for subtle?? Sorry to anyone who likes those coffee can mufflers and tips. I thought about putting a 5" tip on just as a goof, ...just couldn't bring myself to do it!

Well, tomorrow, I put the 521 on the stands and swap the carrier out for a 3.89. If that goes smooth, I'll put the elect ign in too. Then I can start working on the 280ZX struts with 210 springs for my wgn.

Big thanks to the guys that maintain this forum!! I just love the ability to post pics right into the thread!!! Geez...remember back when we had to take pictures on film??...and wait for them to be developed...then wait til we met in person to check them out??? Gotta love technology!!!!

Thanks tdaaj! Are you sure you're lookin' at my wagon??? lol
You might notice that this is the first real thread I've put up....I'm on vacation this week...normally I don't seem to find the time since it does take some time to resize all the pics and post them. I'm going to try to put up some others ....I can think of at least 6 other mods I'd like to post threads on, but we'll see how time works out.

Thanks Ryan! Still comin' down? You gonna follow Paul back to my place after the bbq?? :) Hmmm...maybe about 4 of you guys should come over....I can move the rest of the parts into the back yard then without breaking a sweat!!!

I'd have to look up my notes on the jetting if you want the actual numbers, but I do know they are the stock jets. The truck has the same jetting to. I'm going to change the air idle on the primary when I get a chance, but who knows when that will be. Did you have something in mind??

Got the 3.89's in the 521. Seems to work nice. It wasn't as big a jump as I thought it was going to be since 4.37's came out....I was thinking it might have 4.89's....but considering how easily it would hold 70mph on the highway...I should have known it could be 4.89's. The rig still seems to get up and go nicely, but I probably won't notice much difference until I hit the highway with it. I sure wish my wagon ran that strong and tracked that nice on the road. Wish the brakes worked as nice too!! :) Didn't get the ign in. Oh well. I've got some time to play with it tomorrow.

Sounds like it might rain for saturday....I might actually welcome that for once......means I don't have to wash the rigs before I bring them!! lol

Mike,

What are you going to do with the 4.37's?

Unbelievable!!!!

My wife has been driving my wgn around today. When she got home she said "It does sound pretty cool when you get on it! Had to run a couple of yellow lights, so I floored it"

HHmmm....she looked like my wife....didn't slap me when I grabbed her butt so she must be my wife....hhmmm

I immediately told her that her truck needed a muffler...her reply was "I don't want one like that" hhmmm...Maybe a turbo muffler to tone it down a bit more... :)

Very nice job on the exhaust...I especially liked the mods to the 2-in-1 downpipe collector...I actualy found the dealer had one instock for my truck a year or so ago so I bought it for something silly like 35.00...you should have seen what I fell off with it! It was in bad shape..

Well, time to turn in...see ya tomorrow!

I like the Dyanomax Super Turbo. Not really all that load
dynomax.com or the Thrush or maybe the Ultraflow
Or get a 3chamber turbo. upsize to 2 ich should be fine.
Excessive loud(buzzy with a stock or downdraft weber)Bumble BEE!!!!!!!
Nice tone tuff loud with MIKUNIS!!!!!!!

I only run a 1.75in on my Banzai Car. I should have done 2in but it necks down from the y pipe anyways. If I go header I will up grade to a 2 in

MY yellow car has 2in

my truck is a Super turbo 1.75in

I'm seriously considering ordering a couple of Thrush mufflers(maybe a 31" and an 18") from Summit and redoing it. I have to decide if I want to "fix" another downpipe and pull this entire setup, or just cut if off in front of the muffler and weld up the new stuff....that would be so much easier!! It's on the edge of too loud now...I'm afraid with the thrush, it will be even louder. The point was to get it totally unrestricted....I compromised on the muffler (impatient!) so now I'm thinking I won't really have my answer until I do it the way I should have. Hmmm.....If I pull it as a unit, maybe I can bolt it up under on of the trucks??

maybe leave the center muller and put a 2in thrush or the common turbo mufflers
2 or 3 chamber one
I got some from JC whitney the cherrybomb 2s 20$

I havent run them yet but have as spares.

Believe me your set up know would sound good with a Cammed Mikuni set up but not with the stock or DGVset up. Not ehough air flowing thru there to make it sound good

Maybe just weld a Turbo muffler on the back like stock(I forgot if its like a seden 510 with the muffler on the end).

I like the Dynomaz cause they seem to last longer(better aluminized meter) or the stainless one but that is also louder

I know that the thrush glasspaks have a perforated tube in the middle....much less restriction...more noise. Part of the reason I'd replace the whole setup...if the new one is too loud, I can swap it back in easily.

Do the cherry bombs have the louvered center tube or is it perforated??

I wasn't expecting a "throaty" sound to the exhaust, but it does sound like a small engine when it revs up :)

I'm not so worried about longevity out of this system since it's only temporary until the v6.

Schuck's has Magnaflow's on sale for $59.....they are basically a short glasspak with a perforated center, but have a bigger body to hold more packing. I'm just afraid that with it only being about 1' long, it won't quiet the exhaust near enough to suit me.

The stock setup had a resonator under the driver and the muffler under the rear seat.
