Got my other l20 in, with a little of Bleaches help, everythings fine, actually great, except it's studdering and backfiring, only when i try to mash into the secondary of the ol weber. Changed plugs, gapped factory, checked timing with a light, dead on. sound like the carb? Using the primary it works fairly well, but step into it, the truck coughs and sneezes. I have been considering trying a 38 38 jetted for the l20b. any ideas?????????????????????????? |

My 4X4 was doing that. Secondary main jet was plugged solid. So instead of getting more fuel/air mixture, just got more air, leaned out, sputPOPPOPsput...
(To be fair, I thought it was the timing at first too, and found many more issues that resulted in a full crank bearing replacement, but that had little to do with the wheezing). |

I think that carb is well worn.
How about NEW!!!!!!!!!!!!! PS dont mash on the gas to fast. Then you just create NO vacuum! So is this a new motor or just one that was lying in a garage somewhere and you just installed it? |

would it run 180 off? The engine is solid, Bleach witnessed the timing chain as being dead on, maybe something fishy with the distributor? I rebuilt the carb, which eliminated that, hey Hainz, do you have that picture of the dist tang position again? I lined up the v and dot on the oil pump, but maybe it's possible the shaft turned when i inserted it?

ya, could be that. I didn't see you insert the pump so I can't verify it was done like I would have. Also, we didn't have a timing light. Maybe that is why your timing is a bit too advanced.

Ryan you should be good at this by now.
The dist shaft should be inserted with the dot and cutout on the pump. Bleach should know this also if he was there. Put motor on TDC comp stroke. When inserted it will look like its in the 11.28 position looking from intake side of block. Insert dist on to mount let it lock down. Where rotor points will be #1 plug wire and then go 1 3 4 2 counter clock wise. EZ!!!! You did this already Im sure your using your old EI dist correct? If using the another make sure the rotor is pointing in the right direction. Maybe another was rebuilt the rotor was installed 180off. Im not at work that where my photos are. |
