Oh, and so long as the compressor and turbine vanes aren't beat to hell and/or pitted, it should be rebuildable with new shaft bearings.

Rules of turbos:

DON'T jack rabbit start from OFF. They need oil pressure, don't rev the engine until pressure is built up.

DO let it wind down- don't fly into a parking stall and kill it. Let it spool down a bit. Otherwise it free-spins when the engine is shut off with no oil pressure. The bearings on these mini turbos are usually nothing more than brass bushings with oil passages.

DO ensure the turbo has adaquate oil volume. Pressure is secondary, you need flow. DON'T run a little feed tube off the oil pressure sender on the side of the block, it isn't big enough. Use a Nissan 280ZX turbo oil pump that HAS a turbo oiler fitting, and use braided hose that can take teh pressure (or Aeroquip hose).

I dunno- Was it a clone of something "Normal" like a T-3? Maybe one out of a Merkur or 80s Mustang Turbo?

so one person- not to hijack your thread - could use a nissan turbo oil pump to run a spray bar for the poor misdrilled lobes?

the turbo is a rayjay model 302b-40. you could also use a rotomaster T4

if you want to find a rotomaster t-4 (TO4B)(which are fairly common)
the trim size is y-4 n-.40  .

this is the info on the turbo that was in there from the guy i bought it from

You had a T4 on an L16?!?  way too big, but if your exhaust manifold flange is that big, you'll have to go with that. A regular T3 would be much better for that size engine. You'll have much faster spoolup and more torque.

All 1981-83 280ZX turbo and the 84-89 300ZX turbo run the T3.

well the guy i got it from built it all, so i guess im kinda stuck with it now huh unless i wanna redo all that stuff... if i wanted to redo that stuff i could snag a T3 from a 280-300ZX and be pretty much set?

or is there a T4 on some car that ya can think of off hand that i could snag easy

I would throw the turbo away and go sidedrafts L20b.
Start working on it now.
Would only that a day to put another motor in and have it running

Most of us are not turbo experts and the only turbo L series I see was YOU. Not like we have turbos lying on the floor of our garages.

have that guy working on that Mustang to help you out and paint the car at the same time

well i went and talked to the only datsun guy i know in my area and he suggested a T-25 off of a 300ZX, but i now have something to think about.. there's someone selling a 510 with a KA24DE, the swap isnt completed yet but i've almost bought this before and he said he'd finish the swap if i wanted to pay about $500 over what he's askin for it as is.. im thinking that may be a better way to go since the turbo setup will probably give me problems.. what do you think?

Put the dual sidedrafts on the KA engine and get more power than the L20B.
74 Datsun 710 wagon, all original now, near perfect shape, project vehicle now.

KA has more power then the L20B stock doesnt it... i'm thinking it'd be easier to turbo the KA down the road then try to get the L-16 in my last 510 turbo'd again and running well.. and in the mean time i could use regular gas instead of premium and save myself almost 40 cents a gallon

im not planning to, but for it to be cheap on gas to begin with would be a plus ^_^ i spend $20 to fill up half of my tank in the talon because i have to buy premium.. down the road i plan to turbo the KA and loose as much gas mileage as possable, lol.. not really but probably pretty close to the truth

have you looked into any other motors a turbo ka is alright but the amount of $ you will spend to tubo it you could buy a ca18det and have a motor with only 60,000 or less miles and it was designed for a turbo it was also 185 hp stock and weighs the same as an sr 40 pounds less than a ka but if you got a ka and have the stuff you need to turbo it never mind :) one last thing to ca revs to i think about 8300 rpms stock redline. if i wasn't building an sr 510 i would build a ca turbo or an all motor ka.
