bullet Topic: rebuild required?
    Posted: 17 January 2005 at 3:52am
ok, well for the moment i have my 510 up for sale, but i really dont wanna sell it.. i just cant afford to repair it if it needs a rebuild.. just wanted to see what you guys think before i commit to selling, i get white smoke thru the rear of the turbo and some puff's come thru the carb at time's, it used to idle great before i took the intake apart to check it for build up, but since i put it back together it runs pretty crappy, revs slow, and wont idle.. and it stutters, almost like its mis fireing.. that could probably be due to needing new plugs tho i guess.. (i took out the plugs and cleaned them a bit too vigerously i think....) driver side strut tower is now pretty slick with the reminants of oil comeing from the rear of the turbo houseing, i'll get pic's later so it may help to explain slightly better.. the oil looks like it's bubbleing slightly, if that makes any kind of diffrence.. and the oil only seems to come thru when the car is revved or under load.. also what would be the best way to check compression? i know it's pretty dumb, but i have yet to do that because im lazy, lol. how much would a rebuild kit cost as well? and about how hard do you think it'd be to do? i really dont wanna get rid of my baby, but if i cant do it myself then im gonna have to

I think it best you stop fuking around with the turbo and get carbed L20 and call it good.

I prsonally could never get the cam sprocket back on when I did my first head gasket. I tried the block. I couldnt lift the sprocket up to the cam. I said hell with it and dropped the cahin and did it from the front cover(removed)

Get a compression gauge. Disconnect all electrics (coil, plug wires) and screw the gauge into your spark plug holes, one by one. Crank the car for about 5 secs until pressure reads in the gauge, and check it. My compression is 190 across the board. I dont know what type of motor you have or what your numbers should be...other than consistant within about 5%.

If its blowing oilfrom the exhaust that bad, you probably have a bad turbo oil seal.  There should be an oil line that goes to the turbo to lubricate it, if the shaft seals go bad it will blow oil past them into the intake and/or exhaust side.  Since it ran like crap right after you messed with the intake it is most likely something you did.  Maybe the intake gasket has cracked or was defective and let some coolant get in the engine from the intake heating coolant circuit.  If you are getting oil seeping from the engine seals you may need to replace them or you have real bad blowby(bad rings, hole in piston, damaged piston rings/lands).  Maybe your PCV is plugged up and your vent is plugged up and when its under any boost it blows it out from increased pressure inside.  Where is the oil bubbling at?  Did you leave any small parts in the intake and forget to remove them before you started it?  If I had a good running 5 speed RWD car Id trade you.

i didnt take off the intake manifold, i took of a metal piece that bends to go from the turbo houseing to the manifold.. so i dont think any gaskets are a problem.. the oil only comes from one place, the rear of the turbo houseing where it meet's the downpipe for the exsaust, and this is where the smoke comes from as well

oh, and not too interested in jeeps, thanks for the offer tho!

Ok, sounds like you need new oil seals in the turbo, not expensive and maybe not hard to change either.  You will have to remove the center section from the turbo unit to get to the seals and will have to get new gaskets also. The gaskets and seals will come with a turbo rebuild kit most likely, try finding a dealer of whatever brand turbo you have.

Oh yeah, while you have the turbo off and the houisngs off, check for any play in the shaft, if theres any slop you need bearings also or a new center section.

Do a search for them on the internet, you may even find one for sale cheap that doesnt need a rebuild.  Just take the pipe off where the exhaust goes to the down pipe and look inside the turbo housing with a light if its too dark, look for oil on the pipe, housing, and turbin fins.  Remove the pipe that goes into the manifold(exhaust) side and see if theres oil in that pipe also, if theres a lot more oil on the down pipe side the seal is shot, if its wet in both pipes you have engine problems thats hard to diagnos over the internet.  You can try taking the pipes of the intake side of the turbo and see if theres a lot of oil in the pipe from the trubo to the intake, if theres oil in that your seal on that side is blown. You didnt say if it was blowing blue smoke out the exhaust, but if it isn't your intake side of the turbo isnt bad. Might as well replace both seals whuile you have it aprt anyway even if the exhaust side isnt leaking now, it will be soon anyway.  If you cant afford a rebuild kit, stick a weber or stock carb on it for now until you can afford one, if you use the car as a daily driver.

i'd have to buy a whole exsuast system if i was to do that though as well.. there wasnt any kind of build up on the intake side, just slight discoloration of the metal which i would think is normal due to heat and what not.. the smoke is white with a very small hint of blue

If its mostly white it sounds like a head gasket has blown, only way to tell for sure is to check the turbo seals and maybe try to do a leak down test and see if coolant leaks into the cylinder or cylinders.  Get the engine up to regular temp and then put a radiator pressure tester on at about 15 psi and let it sit.  Make sure the coolant level is full in the radiator before you start. Let it sit a couple hours, check the cylinders for coolant by removing all the plugs and cranking the engine.  If any water comes out the plug holes you have a bad gasket ot a cracked head.  You may have to use a flashlight and look into the plug holes with the piston at top dead center to see a small leak. If there is any coolant the head will have to come off and the gasket be checked and the head checked for warpage and cracks if the gasket looks decent.  Check your oil for coolant also after its ran, it will appear milky and nasty looking.  If theres oil in the coolant and coolant in the oil, you have a cracked head, bad gasket, or the oil passage in the head has cracked and lets the fluids interchange with each other depending on the engine running or not.

i don't know much about turbos, but would it have a coolant pipe that could be leaking and blowing coolant into the intake, causing blown head gasket like symptoms?

Why don't you remove the turbo, block off the flange, and see how it runs sans the turbo? All you would need is a 0.250 plate and maybe a "pop can" gasket to help seal.

Have you done the compression check?

no coolant pipe.. im sadly getting rid of it tomorrow most likely, i need a car i can rely on for a while, once i get settled after i move i'll be on the look out for another dime to play with, maybe buy a shell and have some fun doin a motor swap, or may just see how far i can push an L-series  anyway, i'll be temporarly out of 510s again, but deffinitly not for long, probably no more then 3 months
