so i got her running today...aparently hadnt run for about 4 years...thats the good news. the bad news is that there is something really really wrong with the wiring. i was sitting in the car, testing to see if the heater, lights, etc were all working. everything was going well till i go to get out and i touched a bundle of wire hanging off the steering column. died right away. started her back up,  moved the wires again, same thing dead. any ideas? thanks

Sounds like a bad connection on the igniton switch or associated connector plug.

Is that the wire from the key switch.
it will be a bulk connector with blades on the end. Plug in or clean them, Ck for hack jobs. if not its proplably dirty or loose.

when i got the car there was no ignition at all. just got a new one the other day, went to plug it in and found out that they had just bypassed the ignition all together...the black/yellow wire that plugs into the ignition was spliced to another wire (white) that ran straight to the starter. another loose wire is the orange one. it has fallen out of the female connecter plug so i have to get that in there tight.

Yeah sounds like something weird to me.

all you really need is to know the wires by the coil
blk/wht
blk/blu shorted to blk/grn
Thats of coarse if the key switch is intack.
I dont know why people put those push button starts in them things. I think they are Morons for doing that anyways. its only a 4 cylinder car. Maybe adds to the cool factor or saves on starter soliniods.

i wish it was as fancy as a push button start...its more of a rub two wires together and make it start kind of thing.

if it is a Point type ignition there has to be a Bypass wire to the + side coil and one to the start On START.
otherwise a cold car will not start if only power went thru the ballast resistor.

You have electronic or point ignition?

point ignition. car wasnt running when i got it...had no ignition at all, just the female 5 prong plug dangling there with the black and yellow wire snipped and tied in with a new white wire going to the starter...i have no idea what the heck was going on...its possible there was a push button starter in there, but not when i got it. no battery, no gas, no spill tank for the radiator...that reminds me. know where to get one?

Hainz, even with a push button the solenoid is still being used to activate the starter. Most guys(Ricers) do it to look "cool" like the real race cars, same thing with the hundreds of gauges everywhere inside the car, lol.

Spill tank for Rad? I dont use one. I take it out and route a small hose down if it overheats. But I have good rads so hopefully it wont do that for yrs.

74 wagon,
My soliniod went out I used a scew driver and shorted the grnd and 12volt batt wire to start. Maybe that was a jumper? Dought it huh, should be a big wire!

...all because the $30 contact plate on the back of the key cylinder is bad.
