Closed chamber is the best. Even if you aren't trying to raise your compression, they are more reliable. (less pinging) So you get better torque, gas milage, ect. The square exhaust ports are a little better than round, so a closed A87 is the best but unfortunatly there are A87 heads that are open chambered. Fools gold.

W53 is good because I think they are all closed chambered, but just as hard to find.

The U67 is the smog free head and has the larger valves for the L20b. It has square exhaust ports but is an open chambered head. It is the best of the "common" heads in the US. That's what I run on my monster L18.

Wasn't me. Though when you have round exhaust manifolds you're kind of stuck.

Remember, there's 2 kinds of A87s (open and closed) as well as the N56 and U60 heads. Of course the U60 is pretty much the same as a U67 and a N56 is the same as a W58 AFAIK.

i have a W58 with the steel liners torn out. i did it in hopes of better flow and possibly to stop some engine ping and dieseling when i shut it off. i don't know if it actually did anything ,but i like to think that it did. i wish i had an A87 peanut.

GTZilla's 200hp L28 still has the stock steel liners in the exhaust ports. He did his work on the intake side. That's like having a 133hp L18 with a W53 head.

i'd probly have better flow if i'd get around to puttin' on a header. it still has the old square port exhaust manifold on the newer round port head. i got the truck set up like that. i'm just guilty of puttin' it back together again and not gettin' a round port mani or a header for it for two years.

I have a L18 in my 74 710, what head should it have and where do I look for the number to tell?

It SHOULD have a open-chamber A87 if original. Number is just below the spark plugs (just above where the head meets the block, should have NISSAN JAPAN A87 cast into it.).

If you can't find a number there it'd be a 210 head in all likelyhood- most of those have the number on the FRONT (below the chain inspection cover, above where the head meets the timing cover)

I have seen L18s with 210 heads but those were probably replacements for warped heads as the 210 head was very common on 521s and 521s through 1971.

OK I admit it I voted once for w58.I did so because with a round port header, opened up intake and finally a really nice weber it runs smooth and peppy.

The only reason I prefer it over the a87 is that my l18 a87 with weber is not that powerful and I havnt had it as long as the l20.My l18 has proven very reliable but kinda wimpy.

My w58 doesnt ping with 89 or 92 gas. With the timing dialed in and a newer carb it hardly ever deisels any more and it starts up without pumping the gas.I also recently lapped the valves and cleaned up the combustion chamber.

On a L16 an A87 is fine. Closed chamber preferred but even the stock US-spec open chamber is OK.

A '73 should have the A87 stock. My Mom's '73 does, and I know it's open chamber 'cause I rebuilt the engine in 1992.

L16s also came with the 210 casting head which has somewhat small ports

Tdaaj, I suppose the reason no one "prefers" the 219 is I'm not sure anyone here (except you) actually HAS one. Put one on eBay and watch the price go up up up (the last one I saw, unrebuilt, on eBay went well over $300).

By the mid 70s the JDM SSS cars (Bluebirds) used L18/A87 combos and that countinued until they went EFI.

The buggers are hard to find, as they were only stock on Japanese/Pan-Asia-spec SSS Bluebirds. The NISMO Race version of the SSS head is casting V912. That's the only head that brings more $$$ than a 219 on the Datsun markets.

The 219 and V912 does have one big disadvantage- it is NOT meant for a low-end torque application, it's meant for high end. The intake ports are bigger than any other 4-cyl L-series head (1.5" intake ports, compared to 1.125" for a 210, 1.25" for a A87, and 1.375" for a U67, U60, W58, and N56 head.)
