OK heres what I am up against. I just installed the head on my son"s 72 and lined up the crank on t.d.c.-and then installed the chain(brand-new,autozone) from past experience,I know that in order to be right, you look through the top of the cam-gear,and the top retainer bolt should be towards the right side of the oblong hole..The bolt isnt even visible as the cam-gear hole is at 11 o"clock !!! I"ve tryed setting it at #1#2 #3 to no avail.maybe they screwed up on the locations of the shiny links?how many links between the timing marks-1972 L-16 I tried the chain 2 links off of the timing marks, and it looks good, but I want to be sure before firing it up.Bent intake valves are not friends of mine, especially new ones. OH,by the way,it is the correct length chain, the tensioner plunger is correct,so---HHEELLP!!!PLEEEZE! Tom S.

The chain without any bright links is the OEM chain. Mine was like that. Make sure that the engine was at TDC on the compression stroke, not on the exhaust stroke... The oil pump could be in wrong which throws the distributor timing way off by +/- 20 deg. |

It seems logical that the 1600 would have 40,then. If that is the answer, then they messed up with this chain.on the shiny links.I"m not taking any chances-tomorrow morning,I"m going back to auto zone to re-place it.I cant believe no-one in this forum(except you,thank-you PAKAL) could answer this question for me!What in the H#*$! has happened to all you gear-heads??The old forum was full of info.before it was even asked!Question asked---See post on date_____-?

Whoa- wait a minute. The L16 and L18 use the EXACT SAME timing chain. 42 links between brights. The only difference between the L16 and L18 is the bore, deck height is the same.

The timing cover is still off. I stopped at the chain. When I looked at the cam gear,I knew something was wrong,so I went to the mini-storage to find all my datsun stuff.NOT there, nor in my house!I then went to every auto place(all 3 of them here in town, last resort;the forum. The funny thing is,I should have this info. in my head, after all of the engines I have worked on Scary thing-you turn 40,and senileatykicks in-at least my wife thinks so

Oh poopoo! I tried to do the same thing when I was building my first L18. But by looking at the slack, I could tell it was way too long. And I assumed you knew that the L16 and L18 where the same... all of us know. You've been gone too long. |

Just got back from test-driving a 71 1200 coupe a friend of the family is trying to sell me--Sorry if I insulted you,BLEACH-I think we were punching buttons at the same time(look at your time, and mine-1 minute or less apart!) I feel stupid enough, but to add insult to injury, the straight guide, along with the curved-were installed incorrect,I must have been in too much of a hurry last night(also, the straight one -wasnt...I bent it.

You know, I didn't include any smilies. Anyway, take it slow and don't fire it up untill you're sure its right! ...you don't want to come back asking how to do a valve job. |

lol.....don't worry about the links....all you have to do....is set the engine to TDC on compression stroke...then turn the cam to the same...then chuck the chain on...you don't need the bright links...then just move the cam sproket to different links until you get the V-notch on the cam sproket lined up with/just to the right of the oblong mark in the cam retainer
![]() I messed mine up the first time because I was reading out of my book for the L16 ( i was building a L20 ) and forgot that the L20 is 2 links longer....didn't break anything....just extremely low on power...lol |

Me and my son have logged almost 700 miles on the 521 since this post, and she"s still running great!!I"m now considering building an L-18 that I scrounged up-will probably use it in my 66 520,if I get onto the project before next year!! Until then,I"ll put it in my son"s truck to let him break it in.P.S. When the head is off,T.D.C. is T.D.C.Theres no difference in stroke-cycle-that"s all in the cam timing. Tom S.
