You know, I ALMOST bought a wheel balancer at a estate auction, but thought "what use it it without a mounting machine".
Of course, next auction a mounting machine (10"-17") showed up, but I wasn't sure if it was complete or functional so I never even saw it bid. Now I kick myself, as I have managed to find surplus new (obsolete by 1-3 years though) tires at these auctions for $5 each. Got a set of Goodyears for $20 (175-13's, fit my 510) but mounting/balancing costs $40 a wheel. Crud, I can buy new tires WITH mounting for less. |

You can buy just the mounting machine for up to 15" wheels from Harbor Freight Tools. I think it was fairly cheap... $40-60 or something like that. But what good is an unbalanced tire? Maybe ok for a 12" trailer wheel that doesn't go over 45mph.

Yeah, but this mounter was a full-power rotation mount/dismount machine like the shops use. 240V, almost 6 feet long and had a spin balancer attachment too. The other balancer wasn't as nice- just a cone-shaped device not much bigger than a traffic cone.
Oh, and I've had my "cargo trailer" (a converted EZ-loader boat trailer with 12" tall, 4" wide tires) up to 60MPH. That's as fast as my poor '74 Datsun could pull it loaded down with 9 file cabinets. |
