bullet Topic: 620 Brake Work
    Posted: 13 December 2003 at 7:38pm

I started my new brake work recently. Here's the first pictures from today. The brake setup as it is now and the brand new rotors and brake pads ready to be painted.

I know the brake pads will wear off the paint in the middle area, but that leaves the outter edge blue and the inner area blue instead of rusty. Also, I'll rebuild and paint the calipers so I wanted the brake pads on the outside to match.

And I've got a new lug bolt to replace the broken one and a pair of new brake lines (hoses) for the front. Those are the most expensive part of this project!

Bleach, You might think about taking acetone, and cleaning the paint off of the contact area of your new rotors before installing them. This will keep your new pads from prematurally glazing,or squealing. Just a suggestion(from hind-sight,heehee) Tom S.

The color is blue; the lighting was bad but I got a better picture later. I'll post it tonight.

The paint is only on the outside of the rotor. I suppose i could clean it off. Is squeaking the worst of the problems the paint causes, and will it go away after a while if I just let the pads wear the paint away?

The pads might suck up the solevents and oils in the paint like a sponge. I have a pad on my bike that got fork oil on it and it turns the rotor black in just a few stops. You could put the old pads in to clean the paint off in a few stops, or just use some brake cleaner. I wouldn't use a solevent or petroleum based cleaner, like acetone or laquer thinner.

Ok, now I know. Next time I'll mask it off properly.

Or use water colors... Get your daughter to finger paint them. You might start a new trend. Bling....

I dont' think watercolor comes in 500 deg paint. I used engine paint because I figured the rotors might get a little warm at times.

I tried engine paint on mine too, but it didn't last. Bubbled up and started to peel after a few weeks. But I'm a little harder on brakes

I've heard good things about this stuff http://www.eastwoodco.com/Department.asp?SKW=TSC6&Dep_Key1=spc&Cat=Specialty+Coatings&SubCat=Brake

But it's a little pricey. It's an two part urethane coating that you brush on. Single stage paints don't have any catalyst to make them hard. Hopefully your's will last. I've seen others that lasted and looked good, but mine didn't.

east wood company is great. i used to get thier catalogs all the time. they have all sorts of cool restoration products. but i did see some high temp brake paint in the auto parts store the other day. and if all else fails, powder coating is good.

After a while with the brush on one caliper I gave up. They'll just flake or get dirty anyway. At least I'll get them rebuilt. No paint this time.

I got one side complete. The other is just about to be thrown together. No painted calipers this time but at least the hardware is in good shape. I also took the opportunity to re-grease the front outter wheel bearings.

Before and after pictures obviously. I cleaned off the major portion of paint on the rotors. Here is a preview of my 15x7 rims I hope to put on soon. Can anyone spot my new exhaust tip in these pictures?

(did anyone notice that I carpeted my garage? oh ya, nice on the knees)

Cool, a Folgers Exhaust! Does it come with the cool "Juan Valdez" sticker?

Those are Frontier wheels right? They are nice, in fact they are so nice I might have to confisgate those. Wouldn't want to much bling on that truck. Remember, I'm doing this for you, Bleach.

Correct! Big Folgers exhaust. If I get a few more I can make a grapefruit shooter out of them or I can use them to hold the used brake fluid.

Yes they are Frontier/X-terra 4x4 rims. Polished aluminum with clearcoat. Nissan rims so there's no boring needed.

Randy let me check...

Oh no, I'm at the Bling redline! gotta get rid of those... ya, maybe you should hold onto them. Maybe I can hang onto $400 of your money for you?

I was hoping to find little plain chrome center caps that will slip behind the wheels.. not those enormous NISSAN caps that these wheels usually have. I'm waiting on a little bit of spendable cash to pay for mounting and balancing. I've already got some new tires but they are some rusty chrome wheels that I really don't want. The Bling gauge was reading low with those rims.... but from a distance the bling factor was higher. I wanted something more!

...actually, does anyone have access to equipment that they could give me a good deal on just mounting and balancing a set of four wheels/tires? That would be sweet.
