After looking this thing over,it has nothing in common with a 521(I have 4 of these)My question is... What parts,if any are interchangeable, besides the brakes? since I"ll be installing an L-series eng./5 speed trans. Would I be better off installing this cab/bed on one of my 521 frames? I"m familiar with the 620, but this is another can of worms, altogether. Thanks for any help. Tom S.

I think you will find a good percentage of the chassis parts are common to the 520 and 521. An L series engine will fit with no body modifications. Rumor is that using the engine mounts from a 521 L-16 makes it easy. I installed an LZ20S and 5 speed from an 81 510 sedan in my 67 520. Had to fab engine and trans mounts, but that wasn't too dififcult. The 520 driveshaft is one piece and was a drop in fit. I would probably change the rear end to 4.37, if the engine was a "bit" more powerful. Subaru Justy seats were easy to install, just some minor fabrication of mounts. Bunches more comfortable than the stock seat, a perfect example of why they are called bench seats. There aren't too many of the 520's out there, but they sure can be fun, especially with a discrete engine swap. |

There's a few things common. The dash is the same, just no padded cap. Doors are swappable. Windows. Maybe the bed, what side is the filler neck on a 521?
My '68 has a J15 in it and that's enough for me. But I'm still looking for a J13 (and J13 parts) for my '64 320 so if you have any of that stuff let me know. I know Shipping might be prohibitive (I'm in Tacoma, WA). |

Datsunaholic, I'm in Woodland, between Vancouver and Longview. I have the J13 I pulled out of mine. Couldn't get over 40 mph towards the end. No carb, alternator, starter. Don't remember about the manifolds, it's covered for the winter. Inclined to think the valves are in very poor condition. Will require a complete overhaul. Yours, if you want it. It's not going anywhere. |

Woodland isn't all that far, and I can always use core engine blocks. I'm really looking for a running one but J13 parts are easier to come by than E1 parts (as if J13 parts are easy to find!) so I suppose I could rebuild both and whichever one I get all the parts for first gets the gasket set I already have. I'd rather put a J15 in it but "hens teeth" and J15 are nearly synonyms.
Better if the head and manifolds are still there but I'd have to have the J13 and E1 side-by-side to see what swaps and what doesn't as the 2 engines are really, really close. If the oil filter housing and distributor are still on it that's a plus as they are easier to get filters/caps for than the '64 E1 versions but bolt right to the E1. Won't be able to get it until probably after Christmas as I'll be out of State for a while, then the holidaze hit. But I'd be interested. |
