Coolio... My seats arrived today. These were on E-Bay and I meant to bid on them, but was distracted by a whining daughter. <It doesn't get any better Bleach>

Sooo anyway, I e-mailed the guy when I saw that they didn't sell. He offered them to me for even less. I got the pair for $125 delivered to my door. I haven't really cleaned them up yet, but I took a couple of pictures. I plan on putting them in along with my new carpet, this weekend. They are out of a Dodge Avenger. They're grey and dark blue so they won't clash with the blue carpet and dash. My wife pointed this out.

Damn, I'm slow. In the last two day's I've managed to get just one seat in. I had to fab three of the four brackets to bolt it down. Lot's of cutting, fitting and welding. The tracks of these seats are actually two diferent levels. The Dodge Avenger that they came out of must have a hump or something next to the transmission tunnel. There is about a 1" difference in the track height.

I did manage to get some carpet pad and tape, so I'll put the new carpet down while I have the seats out. Pictures to follow.

Well it got dark on me to soon. I got the carpet down, but not glued in yet. I made zero progress on the drivers side seat, so I'll be driving the wifes car to work for at least tomorrow.

Here are three of the seat mounts I had to fab. One of the four actually lined up to the stock hole! I drilled the rivets that held the Avenger brackets on and welded those to some .125 flat stock. Here is the passenger side right front:

The TIG welder does a sweet job.

Here is all three painted and ready to mount:

Lots of cutting, welding, and grinding. Oh yeah some paint too.

Here is the carpet laid in and cut. Still not glued though. I ran out of light, and my can of 3M super 77 adhesive went bad.

Hopefully I'll be able to work from home sometime this week so I can finish this up!

Next: a stereo, and a new steering wheel!

It's a '82 720 PU.

Yep that's my TIG. It's probably already paid for itself with all the stuff I have welded with it. I did some aluminum welding that would have run me several hundred dollars to have done, and also so stainless welding that I know would have been $500 if it was outsourced. Plus it's easy even for a hack like me to get good welds. I have an Oxy set up as well, but it's more or less just a "victor wrench" now that I have the TIG.

But to be honest with you, unless you are going to be doing lots of welding of small parts, or lots of small aluminum, stainless or even titanium, I would get a wirefeed MIG if I had to do it again. Don't get me wrong, the TIG is sweet, but it's slow compared to the MIG.

Oh Santa, I would like a MIG welder for christmas, if you are on this list

yeah...I've welded with all the different methods ( tho only a small amount with oxy )
done courses in both MIG and TIG ( or GMAW AND GTAW if you want to get technical )
Mig is faster...but I prefer Tig, as you get a better looking weld, and it is a lot more usefull ( can weld pretty much anything )....but alas.....still a student....so I'll have to save up anyway....and that means less $ for my car....lol....oh the decisions!

The guy I bought my welder from (a local shop D&B Welding) chides me for not taking some work from him. In fact he would send it my way, but my skill level is still in need of improvememt. I can weld steel like there's no tomorrow, but my aluminum welds aren't as pretty. But then again I've been using alloy mainly from Boeing surplus, so I have no idea what the alloy really is other than 60XX or 30XX.
I've done stainless with reasonable success, in fact pretty good IMO.

Oxy is almost exactly like TIG, at least in the manner in which the rod is pushed into the puddle to make the nice "row of coins" look. So if you can do one, you can pick up the other fairly quickly. At least that was my experiance.
For those of you that know Guy Selle, check out his welding with a MIG. Very sweet. And the local muffler guy, Kevin from Lifetime in Renton does really nice MIG work. Actually his work is some of the best I've seen. Practice, practice, practice....

Datsunboy stick with it. A top notch welder can earn megabucks and get to work on some very cool stuff. Race teams pay very well, not to mention stuff for the aerospace, and defense contractors.

awesome:)
yeah....MS is easy as anything...stainless is fairly easy too....just more things to be aware of...( I welded up myself a nice stainless surge tank for my car )
I've had a play with welding cast iron, copper, stainless, MS, Alloy....and I think thats about it.
I've found they are all pretty easy, except Alluminium, which I find rather difficult to start and get it going.....but once you get things started, it's just as easy....lol

Okay, update. My first commute with the new seats in was great! What a diffference. I could drive for hours and still be comfortable. Plus with the new carpet and the added padding that I put in, it's much more quiet now as well. Just need to get the center console painted (it's all scuffed up) and installed and it's good to go. Oh yeah I took some of the extra foam rubber padding and stuck it inside the console to give it a little more heft. It seems to be far less flimsy now, but the acid test will be when it's installed too. As soon as it's all back together, I'll post some pictures.

Oh yeah this project includes getting a new left rear turn signal for the bike. I smacked it with the seat back and broke it off...

Okay, after getting the seats installed I decided to paint the center console and arm rest. I went to find some vinyl "paint" (which is really a dye) and had a hard time finding anything other than gray, black or, of all things white! Who wants a white interior? But I digress. In hind site I should have gone with a gray carpet, but I went instead with blue, which was the stock color. Opps, digressing again.

Anyway I ended up going to Wesco Autobody and bought some SEM brand vinyl dye in a spray can. Actually two cans. $12 a can! Yikes
I washed all the pieces in the sink with hot water and detergent, allowed them to dry and them wiped them down with rubbing alcohol.

Following the directions on the can, I misted each piece several times allowing the material to flash in between coats. I ended up putting about four coats on each piece, which used about 3/4 of one can. This is extremley stinky stuff  BTW   so make sure you have good ventilation.

The results were good. It seemed to hide much of the defects, but not the deep scratches. It did however color them evenly so they are barely noticable.

And here are the before and after pictures:

As you can see this is pretty scratched up.

But with a little spray on dye, it looks pretty nice.

Heres the front piece before

And After

And heres the door trim and arm rest

Next, putting it all back in....

Looks very good! ...and I like white interriors. You should make your interrior white so it matches the outside. Once you get your subwoofer in there, your custom steering wheel, and lower that truck 5 inches you'll have a pretty nice mini.

I don't know about the white interiors guy's, but to each his own.

Anyway I have some more pictures of the seats and console installed. It turned out a little brighter blue than the color chart or cap indicated. I plan on doing the dash and the other pieces as well, so it'll all match eventualy.

There. That ought to kill everyones bandwidth.

I'm jealous. Maybe I should paint my whole dash and center console in my truck.
