bullet Topic: new to club, but not the 620
    Posted: 16 January 2003 at 11:52am

hello members, my name is Beau.  i have recently purchased a 1975 standard cab, standard bed datsun 620.  it is in extremely good condition, with only 56000 miles on the odometer (confirmed by the first and only owner, besides me), working datsun AM radio, 4 speed transmission, and all original wheel center caps and beauty rings.  the first owner of this truck replaced parts with only factory parts: it has a brand new nissan air filter, new nissan oil filter, nissan suggested toyo radial tires, and nissan suggested engine oil, transmission oil, and rear end oil.  there is only 3 things that dont work on this truck... the "low" switch when you pull the fan knob(for the heater), the hazard switch, and the cigarette lighter.... all of which are very fixable.

so far all i have done to the truck is:  replaced the ORIGINAL low beam headlights with some H4 headlights, installed a GT Grant steering wheel, and i did an oil change.  the truck runs well, except for a slight hesitation from the carb, and it needs a valve adjustment.

so anyways, i used to have (about a year and a half ago, my first "car") a 1977 datsun 620 king cab, with many, MANY, miles on it... but it burnt up in a forest fire.  well, to make a long story short, after it burnt up, i went searching for a vehicle... and found a 1986 Toyota MR2.  it handled great, ran great, looked good, and was owned by a female... i was in love!  i bought the car and drove the hell out of it untill it was totalled.  i was coming around a corner and some truck was passing a car, he was in my lane, so i swerved, nailed a mountain and some huge rocks.  it was then i decided on this datsun that had been in the local classifieds for weeks now.

well, hopefully all of you fellow truck owners will be able to help me when i need it, and i hope to do the same for you!  i will post my advances every time i do something to my truck, and hope you do the same.  happy truckin' to all of you out there!!

sincerely,                                                                                                             Beau

yep, thats my king cab!!!!!!  hey bleach, howz it goin??  that picture only disturbs me as a datsun owner!  if only PG&E had been a bit more careful with it's stuff, i would still have this truck and all of its precious parts...  hey bleach, got any tips for a little hesitation in the carb about 1/4 throttle (already replaced accelerator pump)?  i wish i still had that truck, and thank you for welcoming me back to the 620 community!!

ryan in seattle: if only you saw that truck in real life, it was tearjerking!  the thing that really made me mad was the 69 datsun 510 that was in perfect condition after the fire, and it was only about 15 feet from my truck when it burnt up!  oh well, everything has a purpose, right?

so anyways, i paid 1200 for a 1975 datsun truck with only 55000 miles on it,  do you think i was worth the money?

Ya, that sounds good for a 55,000 mile truck. Someone who loves their truck might try to get $2000-2500 for a really nice one like that, but $1200 is more realistic.

I think this is also a very beautiful picture for your mantle...

I have some other pictures you sent me of your burnt truck. Some where just of the melted wheels and other angles of the truck. They were a little hard to see, so I just picked the best one to post on my site. Here are the rest for now...

Sounds like a nice truck.
I would get some pathfinder wheels, the older chome ones and put some 185/60/15. Lower it a bit. 50 series is a bit to low a profile. It leave a large gap in betweem.
Maybe convert to a Pertronix Ignition. But if a L-20 dist need to do some grinding. But this looks stock. No Boxes all over truck.
Doesnt the H4 lights need a bigger wire?Draw to much current?
Sound like the owner took care of the truck. Hopefully you will to. Keep the AM radio in there. MY 521 still has its radio. Plus it keep people from wanting t get in your truck. 2 stereos ripped off in my 510.
Valves are EZ to adjust. I use felpro or Japanese gaskets if avail.

Your avitar is nice, but you can't tell what it is unless you open it in a new window.

I think if you use the normal 60/55w H4 bulbs then you'll be ok using the stock wiring for your outside low beams.

i lowered the truck already, 4 inch blocks in the back and cranked the torsion bars down.  it is wayyy to harsh of a ride, plus it doesnt handle as well as it could.  i think i am going to take the 4 inch blocks back and get some 3 inch blocks, then get that extra inch out by playin with my leaf springs, and eventually have them de-arched and stiffened a bit.  the front end i think i am just going to either remove the bump stops and put some "soft-stops" in, or i will cut mine down and put some properly valved drop shocks in.  i know trucks arent known well for handling, but i do like to take on some nice corners from time to time.  as for rims, i was thinking about the Acorn rims (a.k.a. pathfinder), but my friend with a 78 620 has them on his truck, and there are about 4 or 5 other datsun trucks in town with 'em, so i would like to go with something no one has, like the z-71 rims i had on my king cab, or some mid-80's toyota 4x4 rims (the steel 6 "spoke 15's that you see with the black flaking off) and powder coat them "black chrome".

i hope to find a factory tachometer soon (put one in the king cab, and loved it), also want to install a CD player in the truck, along with my little JL Audio 8 W1.  i was thinking of mounting the cd player in one of 3 places: choice number one; in the glove box, where no one can see it unless the open the glove box, or; under the dash in that nice little tray thing under the glove box, with something i could close up the front of it when i am not in the truck, or three;  find a factory center console, and put it there in front of the shifter.  i am not sure which spot i want yet, but the glove box sounds like a decent idea, since i have a remote for the cd player.  i was also thinking about building a box to go UNDERNEATH one of the seats for my 8 inch sub, which looks like it may fit if i use 5/8" wood.

as for the ignition, i plan on putting electronic ignition in it from my king cab (had a spare that didnt get burnt up).  either that or i have a friend with a jacobs ignition he wishes to sell me for cheap cheap.  for now i would like to put a freshly rebuilt weber 32/36, and throw on a 2 inch exhaust with maybe a flowmaster.  eventually i will either throw in a stock KA24DE with some mikuni carbs, or build a full on LZ20B inspired by a 510 friend of mine.  the thought of a VG30 has been floating around in my head, but unless i get rid of those darned torsion bars and build a coilover front suspension, that idea is only floating.

the body:  i would like to shave a few things, flush mount others.  for one: i would like to shave the door handles, and have the doors open by the key lock.  two: i want to flush mount the side markers and wire them to blink when i turn the blinkers on.  three:  shave all the seams on the body, along with the bed hooks (although those come in handy when hauling a dirtbike).  four:  would like it to say datsun on the side and tailgate, but not the bland emblems that are on the side, so i think i will retrofit some "datsun" emblems from the rear of a 240Z and throw those on the fenders.  five:  either build a nice ram air hood, or buy a fiberglass cowl hood.  and last but not least:  mirror tint the door and rear windows, with a nice dark mirror tint strip on the windshield.

wow, i just realize how long this email is.... oh well, just throwing some ideas out there i guess... c'mon, criticize me, i love it!

Beau

p.s.  yeh,the headlight thing, they only pull 55/65watts, but when i parked my truck at work last night, i had left the high beam switch on, and when i got in the truck this morning and started her up, i turned the headlights on and it blew the little dinky 15w fuse, so all i have to do is throw a 20w fuse in there.  within the next week or so i am going to rewire my headlights with relays, so that they are getting a full on 14.5 volts from the alternator.  i did this a few weeks back on an 88 celica gt-s and it made a HUGE difference!

Catalytic converters were a California-only thing until 1980 on Datsuns.  So a '75 Federal wouldn't have one.

If you still have the original EPA label under the hood (most don't) you can tell if it was a California version or not.

my e.p.a. label says "this vehicle conforms to all u.s.e.p.a. and california blah blah blah", so i am thinking that if it didnt come with one, then i dont need one installed on it when i get and get an exhaust done on my truck, sorta like "if it didnt come with a seatbelt then, then you dont have to have one now".  i guess that only means more mid-high rpm power and less cost for an exhaust system....DARN(<----sarcasym).  well, i get a three day weekend this week, so i hope to put my 86 toyota MR2 seats in the truck, and maybe put some music in it (kinda tired of talkradio 650AM!).  anyways, hope to hear some thoughts on my ideas for my truck!

Hmm- if it says Califormia then does the label also have CATALYST in big, bold letters at the top?  That's the clue.  Non-Catalysts say NON CATALYST on the label.

So, if in Cali it's need one.  If not, no one will notice unless they do a visual inspection.

thanx dastunaholic, but the truck was bought new at chico datsun inc. in 1975, and the original owner said he never changed the exhaust on the truck... so i guess i will take it to my buddy down at the local community college smog shop and see what he says... hopefully he says that it does not need one!

Sounds like you got all simular ideas to mine. I think your handling issue is related to the front bump stops. Remove the whole mount and it will ride much better. Put some new urethane bushings on your front sway bar too.

1998-99 Nissan Pathfinder has some nice looking 15 inch wheels. They are alloy with a high gloss and clearcoat.

They look better with some lower profile tires on them. 205/60/15 will give you factory outside diamter.

The factory tachometer is cool, but not very accurate at higher rpms. I'm going with an aftermarke tach (cheaper too) and mounting it in the stock location. That's good enough for me. As for the CD player, you're on the right track. I prefer to have mine within reach so the passenger side storage compartment or glovebox is out of the question.

I've basically got what you plan to do. I put in a cam, Weber 32/36 and I'm planning to port the intake and put on a 2 inch exhaust. I'm going to stick with this engine for a while now.

I might shave the door handles but if I do I'm also shaving the locks. I'll go keyless entry with a very secret mechanical pull to open something in case the battery goes dead or an actuator fails. But that's my own secret. (not a foot switch under the door like in the Fast and the Furious)

I already removed the antenna, and I hope to install a power antenna in the front fender like the 521's have. My headlights are going to be on their own fuses and relays too, but I plan to run four low beams and just the center for high beam. I live/drive only in city areas and almost never even use high beams.

Your ideas sound great. Almost everyone on this board is into customizing their Datsuns. Although I'm just trying to keep things in working order right now...

yeh, those wheels are o.k., but are too bulky for an aluminum wheel, WAYYY to much aluminim!  i would rather run with some nice and strong but thin steel wheels and some 205/60/15 tires.

I like the touch character they add to the 620.

i dunno, i guess i would have to see them on my truck... plus, i am not sure where i would be able to find those wheels at a decent price, all the 4 wheelers around here are into mostly jeeps, samurias, and toyota trucks....  i guess i will just look around, plus, you never know what kind of jewels you can find in a JUNKYARD!!  i found a perfectly good k&n cone filter in a Puegot (sp) that i put on my MR2.

another thing i would like to do is throw a 280zx tranny and shifter in there, short 1-4 gear ratios and very tall 5th, just what i like!  plus those shifters are nice and short, but not too short, i dont like leaning down to shift like i had to do when my buddy hacked the shifter off in his 620.

anyways, truck on everybody, truck on!
